The film is made by the Swedish art group Basecamp: Jannike Brantås, Rikard Fåhraeus, Monika Masser, Lotte Nilsson-Välimaa, Björn Olsén, Kenneth Pils as a special peice made for the "Wetpakete" exhibition series. The artist group Microwesten invited us (art group Basecamp) to participate in a group exhibition. The theme was "Westpakete" a german topic from the cold war period. People from west germany sent packages filled with food, clothes, toys and family pictures - all the good things from the "west". In east germany the parcels was eagerly awaited. Packages filled with hopes and coloured dreams of a better life. Invitation from Microwesten “microwesten” an German artist group invites artists that have been working with them during their 10 year history.
"Today, we invite artists, which worked with us, which we got to know, who inspired us throughout the last 10 years. We call them to send us art for our jubliee show." westpakete (westparcels) Coffeeart, stocking paintings, D-Mark-collages, family pictures Microwesten invites their companions, friends and supporters, which exhibited and networked with us during the last eleven years, for a collaborative show. We invite all artists which have been with us and supported us in exhibitions, art fairs and projects, to send us a “Westpaket”. The term “Westpaket” comes from the time of separation in FRG and GDR. People from western Germany sent their relatives and friends, products like coffee and stockings, to eastern Germany. The “Westpaket” was care and boasting at the same time and for our art action it should be both, medium and artwork, together. Microwesten likes to be impressed and surprised of your parcel art and show this works for their jubilee. At the end of the exhibition at Kunstverein GRAZ (and at the opening in Berlin) we will auction the art parcels off. The artist receives 50% from the selling price, both the gallery and microwesten 25%. The buyers are asked to leave the auctioned parcels till august, 13th in the exhibition. Also in Regensburg and Berlin we will continue with our principle by inviting local artist for performances, artist dinners and lectures.
Works info:

The artpiece concists of two pieces which should be presented together:
1. One package (not to be unpacked or opened)
2. Video
We would prefer that the package is displayed on a table or podium,
and the video on a monitor nearby (played from a DVD or a media player).

To pack - Individual freedom in the collective process (film)

This is a film about how to make an art work together and send it to artist friends of another country. Hopefully they will enjoy the "northpakete" from Sweden to Germany as much as the osties (people from former East Germany) when they got a westpakete from West Germany.

There are several dimensions of funny style, low brow art piece. One about how to make something creative together which is harder than you would think. The basecamp group had booth good and bad experiences from this. Another dimension is what to send in the Westpakete. The exhibition theme is Westpakete which is what people from western Germany sent their relatives and friends, products like coffee and stockings, to eastern Germany. The “Westpaket” was care and boasting at the same time. So the question is: What is worth sending today.

The film is made by the Swedish art group Basecamp: Jannike Brantås, Rikard Fåhraeus, Monika Masser, Lotte Nilsson-Välimaa, Björn Olsén, Kenneth Pils as a special peice made for the "Westpakete" exhibition series at KunstvereinGRAZ e.V, Regensburg and Alte Feuerwache Berlin.
